How can you reverse hair loss related to thyroid conditions?

  • 4 min. read

We all lose hair on a daily basis, the only thing that differs is the density & frequency of hair fall. An average person can lose up to 100 hairs from the scalp each day. These hairs typically grow new ones throughout time to replace the old ones. However, if you have thyroid problems, you might face hair loss more than average, so your hair appears thinner overall.

Alopecia areata, which causes excessive and quick hair loss in particular areas of the scalp and can eventually lead to baldness and affect other regions of the body, such as the eyebrows, is another condition made more likely by having autoimmune thyroid disease.

The connection between your hair and thyroid

If a thyroid issue is severe and left untreated, it may result in hair loss. Understanding how hair grows is necessary to comprehend how these situations result in hair loss.

Hair follicles at the base begin to generate hair at the root of your scalp. The blood vessels in your scalp supply the root, which produces additional cells and causes your hair to grow.

Your skin is being forced up and out by your hair, and the Oil glands help maintain it smooth and silky as it goes through them.

Each time a new cycle of hair development starts, the hair grows for a while before falling out.

Other bodily functions are impacted when hormone production, particularly the hormones T3 and T4, is interrupted. It also entails the growth of hair at the root. Your scalp and other places, such as your eyebrows, may thin out due to hair loss that is not always restored by new growth.

What are the symptoms of the thyroid that are related to hair loss?

Some recognisable patterns of thyroid-related hair changes and hair loss include:

  1. Widespread, diffuse hair thinning/loss on the scalp.
  2. Hair loss that affects specific parts of the scalp and leaves behind round, smooth bald patches.
  3. Bodily hair loss in places other than your head: The loss of hair on the outer corners of your brows is a distinct and distinguishing symptom of hypothyroidism.
  4. Your hair's texture changes: Your hair may become dry or coarse if you have hypothyroidism, whereas it may become extremely soft and silky if you have hyperthyroidism.

While bald patches are unique to alopecia areata, an autoimmune condition that frequently but not always co-occurs with thyroid disease, general hair thinning is prevalent in patients with thyroid problems.

How you can treat the root cause?

Hair loss caused by Thyroid is typically treated by taking the appropriate medications to treat the disease. Adjusting your thyroid hormones will, most of the time, stop hair loss, albeit it can take several months for your hair to regrow.

To encourage quicker hair growth, your doctor might also advise you to take some medicines to treat thyroid or even refer you to a hair expert. For hair fall treatment, you can consider getting a consultation at Advanced Hair Studio, UAE Studio.

What are the natural treatments?

You can attempt a variety of natural therapies in addition to maintaining a healthy & active lifestyle to reduce hair loss & stimulate new hair growth.

1. Enhance iron

Your iron stores are correlated with your ferritin levels. Low ferritin levels may exacerbate patterned hair loss; this exclusion's justification is intriguing. According to researchers, the body's ferritin levels might be impacted by thyroid problems. Think about checking your iron and ferritin levels, then supplement as your doctor advises.

2. Fix Dietary Deficits with Treatment

Even without a thyroid disorder, nutritional deficits can cause hair loss. Specific levels of the following may affect hair retention and hair loss, according to researchers:

  1. vitamins C, E, and A
  2. coenzyme Q10
  3. zinc
  4. copper
  5. iron
  6. vitamin
  7. B-7 (biotin) vitamin B complex

Taking a multivitamin could increase your stockpiles. Be aware that too many supplements containing multiple vitamins may cause hair thinning. Hence, it is best to consult a trusted Hair Loss Clinic like Advanced Hair Studio UAE to get a hold of the situation before it gets worse.

3. Eat and follow a healthy lifestyle.

A diet high in whole foods is essential for good health.

For optimum absorption, try timing calcium-rich foods at least four hours after taking levothyroxine; if you have hypothyroidism, eat them.

Foods that have been processed, such as sugar, red meat, and fried foods, can trigger an inflammatory response. Alcohol and caffeine may also have a role. Hair loss and other thyroid symptoms may get worse if there is inflammation.

Anti-inflammatory foods like ginger and turmeric may enhance endocrine function. Supporting your thyroid, a component of the endocrine system, may aid with thyroid problem symptoms.

Cooking could benefit from adding fresh ginger or turmeric root. They are delicious in smoothies and stir-fries alike. With your doctor, go through supplementation.

4. Herbs Consumption

Specific plants are used in some forms of alternative medicine to cure hair loss caused by diseases like alopecia. These plants, which are administered orally, consist of:

  1. False unicorn
  2. Palmetto-
  3. Black cohosh
  4. Dong Quai
  5. Chaste berry
  6. Red clover

Before attempting herbal hair loss treatments on your own, talk to your doctor about them.

In-home remedies, one should try essential oils.

Despite the scarcity of study in this field, scientists have shown that eucalyptus oil and other plant extracts may improve hair density and lessen hair fallout.

Some more oils to test are:

  1. Montana Arnica
  2. The Atlantic cedar
  3. Lavender augustiflora
  4. Sanctum oscimum
  5. Rosmarinus officinalis Pilocarpus jabarondi
  6. The vulgar thyme

Despite research indicating there may be health advantages, the FDA neither monitors nor controls the quality or purity of essential oils. Before using essential oils, you must see your doctor and be cautious when selecting a high-quality brand. Additionally, you should always conduct a test patch before use and dilute any essential oil in a carrier oil.

Conclusion

Consult your doctor before attempting any at-home hair fall treatments for hair loss. Hair loss usually doesn't occur until a thyroid disease is more serious.

In addition, hair loss may be a sign of another underlying medical condition. To witness regrowth and to address additional symptoms, you might need to combine medication and home hair loss treatments. With the right care, your hair should be fuller within a few months.

It took me 1 Year to decide whether I wanted to go through with the hair restoration procedure using a Natural Looking Hair piece. I did a lot of research and consulted with many people who had done the procedure.

I was convinced to go ahead due to the information session / in-depth knowledge and the excellent customer service skills of Sanjay- the manager.

I did the procedure 1 month ago and I can honestly say that it was the best decision ever. Advanced Hair Studio provides the best quality for the Hair Pieces. The staff takes the time to understand what you are looking for as a customer. They style your hair based on your facial structure and I must truly admit that their stylists are pure Artists! My favourite stylist is Mohamad from Lebanon. He does magic with his hands and I am always thrilled with the new styles/ suggestions he provides.

I must admit that AHS is on the more expensive side if you were to consider the other competitors in Dubai. However, it is all worth every penny spent! You will not regret it.

Do not over think it. Just go ahead an do the procedure. You will evolve into a whole new person! Believe me! :-)

I started losing my hair in my mid-twenties and in spite of trying all sorts of treatments it gradually got worse and worse. By my late twenties I started cutting my hair short. Whenever I tried to grow it, it used to look a mess and was impossible to style because of my receding and thinning. I was looking at doing a hair transplant for a while, but I kept delaying it in hope that there was some alternative.

When I was in my mid-thirties I first came across AHS. I was a bit skeptical but I thought I’d find out what they could do. I was expecting a sales pitch but what I learned about hair loss and hair restoration from them was presented in a straightforward and logical way, without lots of medical terminology. They take time to explain the root cause of the problem and explore all the different treatments.

I decided to go ahead with the treatment and as it turns out, having AHS fix my hair was one of the best decisions I ever made. I still cannot believe how good my results are. I just wish I’d done it 10 years earlier rather than wasting so much time (and hair!). I would urge anyone who is thinking of doing something to check them out.
