Trichotillomania: A Closer Look at this Hair-Pulling Disorder

What is it trichotillomania?

Trichotillomania (TTM) also known as “hair-pulling disorder” is a disorder that falls under impulse control disorders just like gambling where we act impulsively and we try hard trying to stop it. In this disorder, certain people pull their hair either in a relaxed state of mind or in a very stressful state of mind, which can lead to patchy hair loss in certain parts of the body. It is basically an inability to resist pulling your hair from scalp, eyebrows, eyelashes, beard, or other body regions, despite trying to stop.

It is more common in teenagers and young adults and tends to affect girls more than boys. However, it can start when a person is as young a year old.

What are the symptoms of trichotillomania?

If you have Trichotillomania, you might have some of these signs and symptoms:

  • Symptoms 1#: People repeatedly pull out hair from scalp, eyebrows, eyelashes, beard, or from other body regions
  • Symptoms 2#: A sense of tension or anxiety before pulling hair or trying to stop pulling but fail to do that
  • Symptoms 3#: Biting, chewing or eating pulled-out hair
  • Symptoms 4#: Get satiated after pulling out hair
  • Symptoms 5#: Noticeable bare patches of the scalp or shortened hair or thinning of eyebrows and eyelashes
  • Symptoms 6#: Twisting hair pulled-out hair strands or rubbing it across your lips or face

Trichotillomania can be:

Focussed: Here the people are aware of the tension that is built for the urge to pull their hair and get relief after pulling them out. The hair pulling can include specific rituals, including certain types of hair.

Automatic: In this type, people pull out hair without even realizing what they are doing. It may occur while watching TV, when they are bored, or engaged in some passive activities not knowing that it is one of the hair fall reasons that they are facing.

People affected by this disorder often feel shame, embarrassment, frustration, or depression due to their unstoppable urge. They usually try to hide this type of behavior from others. But they feel helpless in front of their impulse to pulling out hair.

This even leads to social alienation as the people affected by this disorder suffer low self-esteem and thus try to cut off from the world.

The people suffering from this problem are used to try and hide their patches of the balding scalp by wearing hats, scarves or wigs.

People suffering from Trichotillomania usually need medical experts to put an end to this problem. It is not something that can be stopped when you feel like doing it. It is highly impulsive and with the right help, you can overcome the urge to pull your hair.

Also, there is no need to cover your bald patches under any wigs or hats or scarves. You can go for a hair loss treatment, which ensures a head full of hair. Having a team of highly skilled hair experts, Advanced Hair Studio gives you a wide range of hair loss solutions that actually help you in filling up those bald patches and giving you a new look.

It took me 1 Year to decide whether I wanted to go through with the hair restoration procedure using a Natural Looking Hair piece. I did a lot of research and consulted with many people who had done the procedure.

I was convinced to go ahead due to the information session / in-depth knowledge and the excellent customer service skills of Sanjay- the manager.

I did the procedure 1 month ago and I can honestly say that it was the best decision ever. Advanced Hair Studio provides the best quality for the Hair Pieces. The staff takes the time to understand what you are looking for as a customer. They style your hair based on your facial structure and I must truly admit that their stylists are pure Artists! My favourite stylist is Mohamad from Lebanon. He does magic with his hands and I am always thrilled with the new styles/ suggestions he provides.

I must admit that AHS is on the more expensive side if you were to consider the other competitors in Dubai. However, it is all worth every penny spent! You will not regret it.

Do not over think it. Just go ahead an do the procedure. You will evolve into a whole new person! Believe me! :-)

I started losing my hair in my mid-twenties and in spite of trying all sorts of treatments it gradually got worse and worse. By my late twenties I started cutting my hair short. Whenever I tried to grow it, it used to look a mess and was impossible to style because of my receding and thinning. I was looking at doing a hair transplant for a while, but I kept delaying it in hope that there was some alternative.

When I was in my mid-thirties I first came across AHS. I was a bit skeptical but I thought I’d find out what they could do. I was expecting a sales pitch but what I learned about hair loss and hair restoration from them was presented in a straightforward and logical way, without lots of medical terminology. They take time to explain the root cause of the problem and explore all the different treatments.

I decided to go ahead with the treatment and as it turns out, having AHS fix my hair was one of the best decisions I ever made. I still cannot believe how good my results are. I just wish I’d done it 10 years earlier rather than wasting so much time (and hair!). I would urge anyone who is thinking of doing something to check them out.
